The Collective Transportation System Metro is facing a new crisis after unionized workers reported operational failures, lack of maintenance, and risks that could lead to serious accidents, including possible derailments. The complaints were made public this Monday during a staggered strike that resulted in the suspension of around 800 trips, affecting thousands of users and highlighting the deterioration of the system.
Structural failures and lack of maintenance According to the workers, the main problem of the Metro is not just daily operations, but the neglect of preventive and corrective maintenance, which has created hazardous conditions on various lines. Among the main issues pointed out are:
• Trains in poor condition • Lack of spare parts and technical materials • Deficiency of operational staff • Deteriorated infrastructure on tracks and stations These conditions, they warn, could lead to major incidents if not addressed immediately.
Risk of derailments alert Deputy Diego Garrido warned that Metro operators have identified sections with a possible risk of derailment, and demanded that the capital government make this information transparent. He also called for urgent inspections on the most affected lines and, if necessary, suspending the service to prevent accidents.
History of accidents in the Metro The alert comes in a context marked by recent incidents, such as the collapse on Metro Line 12, as well as fires and train collisions at the Potrero station on Metro Line 3, which resulted in fatalities. This history has increased concern about the actual state of the system.
Vital system in critical condition The Metro is the main means of transportation in Mexico City, used daily by millions of people to get to their workplaces, schools, and homes. However, accumulated failures and lack of attention to structural problems have placed the system in a critical situation where user safety could be at risk.
Urgent actions needed In this scenario, PAN legislators demanded that the capital government prioritize comprehensive Metro maintenance over superficial works, aiming to guarantee a safe service and avoid a new tragedy.
